Amazon has outdone itself again.
Just within days of launching the Kindle 2, Amazon also released its new Kindle iPhone app and sent iPhone users scrambling to download the free app and trying it out. The verdict? iPhone owners have been impressed enough that many of them have jumped on the Kindle bandwagon and have purchased one themselves. How exactly does this Kindle iPhone app work?
For starters, it’s like having an extension of your Kindle with you wherever you go. If you’re one of those who think that reading the Kindle even while waiting in lines or taking subway rides is a bit overdoing it, then the iPhone app is the answer to your reading dilemma. Take the iPhone with you anywhere and take advantage of short bursts of reading your Kindle books whenever you have some free time.Applicable for both the iPhone and iPod touch, the Kindle for iPhone app has even taken the effort to make reading from the iPhone a pleasant experience.
Given that the iPhone is a compact device, the readability is still great with 5 font sizes to choose from. Plus, going through pages is easily done with just a mere swipe of the screen right to left, or back. For bookmarking pages, finding the table of contents, going to the beginning or a specific location, and looking at the image cover, a couple of taps is all it takes as well.Accessing all your Kindle books even without the Kindle around is also possible with the Kindle iPhone app. Just log-in to your Amazon account and download any of your books stored there straight to your iPhone. Even better, you can continue to read right where you left off from either device, thanks to Kindle’s Whispersync technology. Make sure to sync your Amazon Kindle or iPhone before leaving and either one of them will automatically go to the last page read when you resume reading.
Another great thing about the Kindle iPhone app is that it gives the reader a full-color version of the images from its LCD screen, as opposed to the Kindle’s shades of gray. What it cannot do however, is permanently replace the Kindle as the choice reading device. While the iPhone acts as a perfect foil to the Kindle, the latter’s e-paper technology, wide screen, and superior readability is still the best device for hours of nonstop reading. However exciting the new Kindle for iPhone may be, it still has a few downsides. First, buying books from Amazon or even just browsing available titles directly through the app is not yet possible. Moreover, the Kindle iPhone app is currently exclusive for ebooks and not for newspapers and magazines as yet. And one more thing, the dictionary feature is not available yet on the Kindle for iPhone app. These are minor drawbacks though, and with the way things are going with the Kindle, these features are surely not far off.

The Amazon Kindle 2 and the Sony Reader PRS-700 are two of the hottest ebook readers to hit the market in the past 12 months, bringing reading pleasure to an entirely new level. For those who are new to ebook reading devices and are interested in getting one, here’s a comparison of the Amazon Kindle 2 vs. Sony Reader and how they match up against each other.
Price
The price of any gadget is a big factor for many individuals especially for first-time buyers. The Amazon Kindle 2 is currently priced at $359, while the Sony Reader is currently pegged at $399, making the Kindle 2 cheaper by $40.
Size and Weight
The size and weight of these gadgets don’t really give one distinct advantage over the other. The Sony Reader PRS-700 weighs around 10 oz., the Kindle 2 just slightly over that. The Sony Reader is a bit wider and thicker, while the Kindle is a couple inches longer. In any case, both are very convenient to carry around.
Display
The two reading devices both use e-ink technology which creates a display that is very similar to text on paper, eliminating eye strain, and providing an easy read with crisp, clear text and images. The Amazon Kindle 2009 however, is now enhanced with 16 shades of gray, while the Sony Reader has an 8-level gray scale.
Wireless Capabilities
Here is a category where the Sony Reader is clearly bested by the Kindle. The Amazon Kindle 2nd generation makes use of the Whispernet technology, providing free wireless coverage in the US via Sprint’s 3G high-speed network. Kindle users can gain access to over 240,000 book titles, magazines, newspapers, and even blogs. By just choosing the reading content of choice and paying for it, the book or magazine will be downloaded to the Kindle anytime, anywhere within minutes! The Sony Reader PRS-700 on the other hand, still lacks this wireless capability, and with only less than 100,000 books to choose from, it does not even come close to the breadth of content that the Kindle offers.
Formats Supported
Both electronic book readers support most commonly used formats such as TXT, MP3, JPEG, GIF, PNG, and BMP, plus some formats unique to each device. The Sony Reader however, supports PDF while the Kindle 2 does not – not directly, anyway. PDFs still need to be emailed to Kindle’s support desk to be converted for viewing on the Kindle and Amazon has gives an advance notice that “some complex PDF files may not format correctly” on the Kindle.
Storage Capacity
In this feature, the Sony Reader gains the clear upper hand. True, the Amazon Kindle 2 has 2G of internal memory of which 1.4g is available for content and can hold up to 1,500 books, but it no longer supports external memory cards. While the Sony Reader’s 256mb internal memory may seem like peanuts compared to the Kindle, the main advantage actually lies in the Sony’s ability to support up to 16G of external memory. Now that’s a great benefit not only when it comes to holding thousands of content should one need it, but also for managing files into different memory cards.
Battery Life and Charge Time
The two ebook readers have the same capacity when it comes to battery life. On a fully charged Kindle 2 or Sony Reader, one can read straight for two weeks without needing a recharge. The only difference is that if the Kindle 2 is used with the wireless turned on, the battery capacity is reduced to just four days. Charging time for both readers is four hours via USB, or two hours using an AC wall charger. The Bottom Line 2009 Comparison of the Amazon Kindle 2 vs Sony eBook Reader:Although it’s not a total knock out for the Kindle over the Sony Reader, it’s close! The Amazon Kindle 2 remains the better ebook reader hands-down. The price, breadth of content, wireless capabilities, and overall design improvements of the Amazon Kindle 2nd generation makes it a clear winner over the Sony Reader 700.

In the last two years, netbooks had made substantial growth in the PC market and begun to take market share away from laptops possibly due to their featherweight designs and low prices. But, the devices lack key features like optical drive, have reduced specification and computing power. In contrast, Tablet PCs offer an edge over netbooks with its touchscreen and use of digital pen or a fingertip, instead of a keyboard or mouse. Recently, Apple had ignited the tablet market by announcing its entry in the segment. It is reported that ASUS, Dell, Samsung are also planning to introduce their tablet PC by the next year. Therefore, consumers can soon expect small touch-screen tablets from all major PC vendors. But, the question is will tablets kill netbooks and e-readers in 2010? At present, Tablet PCs have a bad reputation. It is due to Microsoft’s unclear vision for the devices, which resulted in higher cost, slower input speed, unpleasant pen-based tablets, and risk for screen and hinge damage to users. The Windows XP Tablet PC Edition operating system lacks power. But, after the introduction of several new mobile operating systems and cheaper components, the next generation of tablet PCs can outshine Netbooks in near future. The new Tablet PCs will have following new features that will make the devices to intersect other markets. Now, use finger instead of penAfter the success of iPhone and other touchscreen mobiles, it is understood that actually touching the screen is far more appealing than using stylus, which requires different UI and software up gradation that Microsoft unwilling to do till Windows 7.Due to the introduction of Swype technology and new mobile operating systems, the touch technology will make all the difference in the next generation Tablets.Mobile phone operating systemsThe new Tablet PCs will be powered by various mobile OSs like iPhone OS, Android etc, instead of Microsoft’s Windows. These operating systems will provide adequate software compatibility to the Tablet devices for accepting human touch and will make them cheaper, faster and more ultraportable than before.
Tablets or Big mobile phonesIt is assumed that the next generation Tablets will be touch phones with large screen, therefore cheaper to build. Further, due to lesser-powered processors, small RAM, free operating system and smaller screens, the cost for manufacturing them will be similar to the netbooks i.e., cheap.Applications and connectivitySimilar to the cell phone apps stores, Apple will certainly pour large number of applications to its touch tablets. Further, various other vendors will also join the race to encash the growing opportunity of apps platform.
Meanwhile, when tablets will be sold like Smartphones, then the connectivity feature will come in-built. Hence, consumers can carry the tablets like their mobile phones.HD video and e-book conceptAt present, people are watching internet TV rather than using the conventional one. Therefore, they require a cheap, high-quality tablet which will provide High Definition video on the move. Further, the Tablet PCs can be used as e-Book reader; hence, it will be a good option against Amazon Kindle or Sony PRS range.DiscussionIn Netbooks, you have to type on its small keyboard, which is somewhat problematic to professionals. Whereas, Tablet PCs can be a fold-up or roll-out and use a Bluetooth keyboard of your choice. It is true that they will provide more refined experience to its users, but besides its functionality, price does matter for its success.

Bigger and better I have just finished my first meeting with the Kindle DX and I’m very happy. I signed a customer service blog, Kindle 2, I noticed NIT “cascade stupid” people who in all honesty that life. If you want to book a penny not buy more than $ 9.99,! If the remote mountains of Asia, and the product is wireless in the U.S. alone, where the traffic and so on! When you turn the DX, which is now the ideal size for a book substantailly heavier, but, oh, great characters. You are beautiful. 55 years and I had Lasik surgery on one eye. My vision was corrected 1920-1920 without glasses, but to feel anywhere near and far, absolutely perfect. Price do not need glasses. Kindle DX is the source of a complete, one of the two largest sizes. In comparison to the Kindle 2, not only the sides of the same size for two clear growth mode. Then when I try to find something, for example, verses from the Bible, at smaller font, more content. One that I have, if they would greatly increase the font pop I am free at home. Of course, I would like, and color, and pay for them, but they will in time. Do not let today with the United States if you do not want to be optimistic about this article. This device is not ready for a normal color. Better would be to a PC, or read your site for free subscription now in the U.S., the iPhone or the computer. IPhone integration is very good, and if you want to quickly read before bed on fire! Downloads and updates are very simple. It is clear that the removal of the buttons on the left side was a terrible mistake and run cries of anger, fear, no doubt about issues for the next generation. Can the Kindle be the next best? Of course! IMac later is better? Of course! The next generation of the Windows team is better? Sure. The same applies to flat screen TVs, cars and mobile phones. If you are a monster, and get the latest technology as soon as you DX. If you are already outside the lines “If the enthusiasm of a pony and his son, because I love it. We know that one DX by 70% of what you paid for” selling out when the next one. In fact, if after this color and / or lighting and bought the first day of you have almost 90% if it is sold out quickly. So if you Kindl’r for the first time is the time to be involved. If you are a candidate for the update, it is clear to buy when the problem size and the Police. When the backlight to see color versions of the hits, my next purchase, if it is a team in perfect condition!. The new Graphite Dx is great for pleasure and work New DX perfectly with my technical requirements not yet in the past. I see a device that serves all my needs eReader Free Reading, Reading, and technological innovation. I would like especially to people who spend much of their time to recommend the reading of technical documentation. IPAD LCD is just as important in this context, someone who consumes a lot of reading during the day – just as my group and I do not want to spend days in front of the LCD. Adaptation to the screen in PDF format is suitable for my reading and landscape mode is ideal for reading at close range. The contrast between the more than 50% makes a big difference. Taking into account the lack of sales tax that is at least 170-180 $ cheap as the IPAD.
Also, note that e-books to increase their validity. Described in the total price is guaranteed most of the world to make it right and at a competitive price (compared to the IPAD), which are unresolved. DX is certainly important to our readers who appreciate the long battery life, the ability to read in direct sunlight, I would like eReader and many of technical processing in addition to e-books. It is an ideal student, books and experience in pdf format, reads the screen is larger and in turn, important victories against the rival. NOTE: Many critics commented on the interests of the Kindle ebook lover seriously, I do not want to repeat. My goal here emphasizes the additional advantages that the value is a subset of the right of consumers to the same requirements increase. Comments on the new software update that applies to all light: A new feature to your notes, and summaries on Twitter or Facebook, those who actively use social networks to attract to share content. I am actively looking forward to days with touch screen and ink, and hybrids of the sense of reading and writing. Certainly, it seems to scoring, and share a lot easier, but this feature is not yet on the market. Who’s boat and was suspended indefinitely, as long .Best Device For ReadingFirst I will on my previous punishment I have other voters in the last two years have tried. This makes the experience as opposed to graphite Kindle DX. I tried to edit the Sony eReader, iRex iLiad Book Edition iRex Edition Dr A4, and recently bought IPAD, especially when reading from. Sony eReader PRS 505 Edition (250 € budget at that time) I was not with the size and speed of the device and finally gave a satisfied friend. PDF feedback was impressive, but. Includes access to the contents and bookmarks. Too strong. Then I tried iLiad Book Edition (price of 450 pounds at the time). It was very easy and the screen size is bigger, but not enough text on a black screen a little “light. Again, you can sell it on ebay for half price. Then try iRex DR800 A4 (£ 500 bought at the time) very difficult, and while the text is not dark enough to read comfortably. He was forced to sell on eBay significant losses. My hopes were high enough priority IPAD. All rooms are incredible, but unfortunately I could not be read easily. Combination of clarity and brightness are not pleasant to read. Color has more features, but does not translate comfort. However, I would be useful to add other functions. At some point, when he lost hope Kindle give voters rejected a final commitment graphite DX. Within a week. Not discuss the advantages and disadvantages, and many other statements incomplete. You were very impressed with this device. The text is black. It was nice to read it without the work that the previous system. Although not quite perfect device (folder structure is weak, no pdf-reperfusion is not an index with separate numeric keypad does not work on pages skip) is a separate category, all is different when it comes to a comfortable reading (weight throughout easy to navigate from one point, the text itself is good, because the real book for me) .

I’m not one inclined to writing reviews but I do examine them carefully before I make a significant purchase, here on Amazon.com and on other seller web sites. So on the chance that I might say something that helps a potential buyer make up their mind, particularly someone who has not owned the first Kindle, this is my small effort to give back to the process.
First of all, I loved Kindle 1 although I noted several shortcomings due primarily to the design of the hardware. I’m glad to learn that every shortcoming(except one) has been fixed beyond my expectations. When I received my Kindle 2 yesterday, I eagerly removed it from the shipping container, plugged it in and began to download my library. As I did I marveled at the new Kindle’s fresh, sleek design. It is a beauty!
The main issue I had with Kindle 1 was the navigation button design and placement. My original thought was that I wanted to use my Kindle 1 without a cover but I quickly learned that doing so wasn’t practical. I like to read holding the Kindle with one hand and it just didn’t work well because I kept bumping the next, previous and back buttons. So I began to use the cover it came with so I could hold the Kindle by the cover, only to learn that this cover did not keep the device securely in place very well. So I bought an m-edge cover, which is bulkier and the front does not fold back easily. I was stuck reading using two hands and I didn’t like that at all.
Kindle 2 solves all these problems. I’m not going to bother with a cover at all now. I love the way it feels in my hand without a cover. It is easy to navigate without any risk of accidentally changing the page I’m on. I will probably buy a Belkin sleeve to protect it when I take it out but that’s all. Now my reading experience is complete!
The Kindle 2′s redesigned features are fantastic. The display is better and the 5-way button is a major improvement. I do a lot of highlighting and this design fix is huge. Looking up words is much easier and many times faster. One improved feature I haven’t notice any comment on is the progress bar at the bottom of each book page. Now it shows the total number of locations and the percent already read. This is so much better than the old way of determining how far I’m into a book. Thank you, design team!
The fact that Kindle 2 has no SD card capability and the battery is not user-serviceable is not an issue with me. Even with a few hundred books in my library, it will be a long time before the 2 gig memory starts to be a limiting factor and when it does (if it does) I’ll just archive what I’ve already read. Amazon’s design team has made it simple to pull archived books back to the Kindle 2 without having to go to a computer.
The only item on my wish list that was not addressed in Kindle 2 is the lack of an improved file storage system. It would have been nice to have that but it doesn’t take away from my enjoyment.
Page turns are significantly faster and the page reloads are less intrusive to the reading experience. On/off buttons are repositioned to be easily accessible. The home page is easier to navigate. There are other improvements that many others have already noted so I’m going to stop here without repeating everything that’s been said already. But the biggest thing about Kindle (both 1 and 2) is the Amazon store and how simple it is to browse and buy books from. I’m so impressed with the way they have seamlessly brought the store together with the reading device via Whispernet to make the digital reading experience such a wonderful thing to enjoy.

With the recent release of the iPad, more and more users are experiencing just how capable the device can be in terms of usability and versatility. When the iPad was released, many people were intrigued upon learning that book reading through different apps could easily be conducted with a touch of the screen. What sets iPad apart from other mobile book readers is the fact that Apple was able to program into the iPad the ability to vividly capture colorful scenery and stunning lifelike pictures. Books are able to come to life much more effectively than they otherwise would be on other devices. The iPad is also able to support video downloads to go with the book that is being read while also incorporating interactivity between the user and the book. Let’s take a look at some of the best ebook reading applications that are compatible with the iPad.KindleThe main aspect of Kindle that sets it apart from the rest of the IPad reading apps is the sheer volume of books that are able to be downloaded and read. With almost 500,000 books being available for instant reading, Kindle is able to offer users of the iPad a variety of reading material that no other app can. Kindle also gives the reader an option as to what background they would rather read on. Users can choose between white and black depending on whichever is easier for that particular individual.iBooksiBooks is an application that comes directly from Apple. While its lineup of books is not nearly as diverse as Kindle, it does give the reader the advantage of being able to read a “demo” version of the book, which can range from a few pages to entire chapters. This should give the reader ample opportunity to decide if the book is worth reading or not. iBooks also offers up a lifelike page-turning feature that is sure to make you forget that you are reading a book on an iPad.ComicsMarvel, the same company that brought you comic books like the Incredible Hulk and Spider-Man, also offers up its own app on the iPad. For a minimal price, users can access over 350 individual issues of different Marvel comic series. Another interesting concept that the Marvel Comics app introduces is the ability to focus in on different parts of a certain page to really be able to distinguish what the author was trying to convey with his drawings.WattPadThe WattPad, which is still the only ebook reading application that support all available mobile devices, gives users a different kind of experience when reading from their iPad. While it has taken a great deal of criticism for allowing users to upload published books to the community, the wide array of free books that WattPad offers is amazing. There are many ebook versions of some of the most popular books ever written, and they are all free, but the reader should be warned that some have claimed that certain books on WattPad violate existing piracy laws.Cloud ReadersCloud Readers is a free app that allows for easy book and comic book reading through the iPad. The aspect that really sets apart Cloud Readers from other competitors is that it really does a phenomenal job in reading and presenting .PDF files on the iPad. Any book or comic can now be read in an original .PDF file easily and efficiently. Cloud Readers also allows you to read public domain books that are submitted to the Cloud Readres community. These books are all free and can be read at any time.

The iPad has energized the market for tablet computers, paving the way for an expected onslaught of slate-type devices.
The Dell Streak that I’ve been testing for a few days is a tablet, too. And that’s pretty much where comparisons with the iPad cease.
Oh, sure, folks will ask the same basic question of the Streak that they asked before the iPad appeared: Is there room for a slate that’s larger than a smartphone but smaller than a typical laptop? But where the iPad has a near-10-inch screen and a form that brings it into the ballpark of some notebooks, the Streak is at the other end of the spectrum. With its 5-inch, multitouch-screen, Streak resembles a smartphone that went on an eating binge, like an old-fashioned PDA. And Streak, unlike an iPad, will fit in your pants pocket, albeit with a bulge, or jut out of a shirt pocket by an inch or so. toshiba pa3284u-1bas battery
treak actually doubles as an Android-based smartphone. But phoning is not its strength nor the reason to consider buying one. I couldn’t hang up on a call when the dial pad was on the screen covering the “End Call” button. And while the Streak is petite for a tablet, it is gargantuan by modern standards for a phone — like a handset that belongs to the past century. It weighs in at 7.8 ounces. Streak isattractive and thin, though better suited for tablet duties. toshiba pa3534u-1bas battery
Alas, I didn’t love the virtual keyboard. And Dell is a generation behind when it comes to Android. It runs Android version 1.6, making it a tad listless. Dell has added its own tweaks to Google’s operating system and says an over-the-air update to version 2.2, or Froyo, is in the cards. toshiba pa3356u-1bas battery
Here’s a closer look:
•Availability. Dell won’t say but indicates the Streak is coming very soon. This week Dell started soliciting pre-orders for Streak on its website, offering folks first crack at the device when it does go on sale, and a chance to buy a Plantronics Bluetooth headset for 99 cents.
•Price. That’s also a Dell secret for now, as is the identity of Streak’s official U.S. wireless carrier. All signs point to AT&T, though. Michael Dell has mentioned AT&T as a Streak partner in the past, and AT&T will be bringing out the Dell Aero smartphone in the not-too-distant future. I was able to test Streak with an AT&T sim card. (In geek terms, Streak is compatible with UMTS, GSM/Edge and HSDPA and HSUPA networks. The device is already on sale in the United Kingdom via the wireless carrier known as O2.)
Meanwhile, at the recent D technology conference, Dell executive Ron Garriques suggested that an “unlocked” Streak would cost about $500 in the U.S. If so, I’m betting on about a $300 price if you ink a two-year contract with a carrier.
•Size matters. The Streak is of a size that’s just not going to appeal to everybody. Whether Streak is too big or small depends on your expectations and whether you plan on mainly using it as a phone or tablet. As a tablet you’ll appreciate the 5-inch screen for watching video, browsing the Web, reading e-books — I fetched the free Kindle for Android app — and viewing maps. The largest screen sizes I’ve come across on more traditional smartphones are the 4.3-inch displays on devices such as the Droid X and Evo 4G.
Streak’s screen is about the right size for a decent portable navigation device. I used free audible turn-by-turn directions inside Google Maps. You’ll probably want to use an optional car kit that mounts the device on the dash and lets you plug it into a power source. I didn’t have one for testing.
•Torture resistance. The device feels sturdy and durable. I mostly used it with two hands in horizontal mode, except when held up to my ear as a phone. The screen is covered by Corning’s torture-resistant Gorilla Glass. I stabbed the display with a pen without causing damage.
•Memory. Streak comes with 2 gigabytes of internal memory, which should give you ample storage for apps you download from the Android Market. My test unit also was supplied with a 16-GB microSD card, expandable to 32 GB. Inside is a 1-gigahertz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor that may feel zippier with a later version of Android.
•Visuals. Streak has a 5-megapixel camera on the rear that took OK pictures and videos, plus a lower-quality VGA front-facing camera you can use for video chats, as on the iPhone 4. Using Wi-Fi, I tested video chat on the Streak using the free Fring app I downloaded from Android Market. Both the audio and video quality on test calls with Fring were poor. And a separate call to a person who was using a 3G network (while I was on Wi-Fi) was unwatchable, with lousy sound to match. (To be fair, Apple’s FaceTime app requires Wi-Fi.)
Streak has a removable battery. With power-saving measures turned off, the battery pooped out late in my workday. Most people should find battery life sufficient under normal conditions.
Computers near this size have never really caught on in a big way. I suspect Dell may have a hard time turning its tablet into a winning Streak.
