    I often get those Free ebooks on Amazon to read on my Kindle device, when I have some time. They are Free because they are in the public domain, so everyone have the right to publish it. Since the cost of ebooks are very low, so Amazon can just provide them for Free.

    There is no copyright issue for books in the public domain, so there is virtually no cost to use those book content for republish. Here is also a website which provide over 20,000 Free ebooks available for the Kindle:

    You can also find quite a lot of cheap ebooks for the Kindle on Amazon. Read this article (especially the end of it) from a book lover, see how she says:

    Lots of public domain books are Free because they are not copy written. There’s no royalties to pay. But I’ve found they usually have better formatting if you get them from a site such as manybooks.net.

    Amazon offers some books for Free as promotional material. Sometimes just to bring an author to light or to offer a first book in a series Free to get you hooked on the rest of it. They’re not scams, they do provide good reading material!
