Amazon Kindle 2 Review: Why It’s The Most Popular eBook Reader Today

You may not have heard about the Kindle when it first released. Compared to some technologies such as the iPhone and new versions of Windows, the Kindle was a fairly quiet release. If you are an avid reader, you were probably more than a little intrigued. But intrigue grew into popularity with the release of the much-improved Kindle 2. And now with the Kindle DX, the most advanced reader on the market, Amazon has become the single most popular maker of ebook readers. But is all this popularity well-founded or is it just hype brought on by a new piece of technology? To be fair, it is a bit of both. The Kindle is far from a perfect device and it won’t be replacing the paper book just yet, but it does offer the best possible way to take your books, and lots of them, wherever you want to go. That portability is something you just cannot find with normal books. And even though the Kindle DX is big, roughly the dimensions of a sheet of paper but substantially thicker, it can bring over 3,000 books with it. You would need quite a backpack to carry a library that big with you.The Kindle 2 may be the most popular ebook reader available, but it certainly isn’t the only one. The DX, however, is really the only one of its kind available. It offers a huge screen, more storage and some cool features such as a rotating screen like the iPhone. But it also makes a huge price jump from the Kindle 2.The price of the Kindle DX is a whooping $489. This is probably why many people, even those who think highly of the Kindle and the ebook technology, are hesitant to get a Kindle DX. It doesn’t even come with any freebies like a bestseller or two, and since you would still need to purchase a good cover for it, your costs could extend well beyond the $500-mark. At the very least, couldn’t Amazon just have thrown in a cover into the package?Since the Kindle is a fairly new device, it still hasn’t completely broken into the market. Although it is the most popular one, the Kindle still can’t offer its internet connection service outside the country. Once the Kindle is more established, this is likely to change. For now, many people just see it as a fancy way to read books. But it wasn’t so long ago that the iPod was just a fancy way to listen to music. Now, it is one of the most widely spread pieces of technology you can find. The Kindle remains revolutionary in what it offers. Eventually, it is hard to imagine that paper books will not be replaces. For now, it is still a luxury to many people, but as it discovers its territory in the marketplace, more and more homes will be losing the bookshelf and getting a Kindle.

Before I ordered my Amazon Kindle 2 from Amazon, I read several reviews on the web. There are literally hundreds if not thousands of people out there that have written their own personal Amazon Kindle reviews. But, there are some people that truly do not understand the magnitude of this new innovative device (it’s current stage in development and how fast it’s market is growing) and there are some that do. While reading these reviews, it becomes very clear which category people fall in. To put it in another perspective, I work at top well-known investment research firm and without getting into too many specifics, lets just say we are very bullish on AMZN stock most specifically because of the huge potential of the Amazon Kindle in the emerging e-reader market. No I am not trying to give investment advice (thats not part my job) but I just want to make it very clear how excited I am about the product and its market in general. My Amazon Kindle 2 review is no holds barred and no BULL SHIP!

In the few weeks prior to the announcement of the Amazon Kindle 2, you couldn’t turn a virtual corner without stumbling over alleged rumors and “insider” information regarding the new innovative device. Last month, having played with my boss’s Amazon Kindle 2 at the office, I found myself in absolute lust for this gadget. Before I decided to order the Amazon Kindle 2 as Christmas gift for myself icon wink Amazon Kindle 2 Review: In Depth Amazon Kindle 2 Review , I reviewed, reviewed, and REVIEWED several Amazon Kindle 2 websites, articles, and reviews. The following is my Amazon Kindle 2 review:

As is the case with all new cutting-edge technology, the Amazon Kindle 2 has several negatives, but in my opinion, the benefits far prevail. Amazon has nailed the ebook market and will probably dominate for several years. I expect that we’ll be reading ebooks while we rocket to Mars in 2100. Whether you join the bandwagon now or later, it is inevitable. Send me a message if you have any questions regarding my Amazon Kindle 2 review.

Lately, I’ve been working on a website that reviews the Amazon Kindle 2 even further: reviewing Amazon’s main e-reader competitors, emerging issues / stories, Kindle accessories, and user tips! CLICK HERE to get the latest scoop / reviews on the Amazon Kindle 2 and related products.

First, Amazon pioneered online bookstores so people can purchase books without visiting the bookstores. Then, they redefined reading by enabling people to read books without the books through the Kindle ebook reader. And if those privileged with the initial Kindle are still gaga over it, wait till they catch sight of the Kindle 2. In a nutshell, the Kindle 2 is the original Kindle with a big step further into the future of reading. Like many other things, new-wave reading is electronic. If the e book reader is Oprah’s current favorite gadget, so will it be for many of her fans. Sure enough, the Kindles have been flying off the shelves. And why not, all-in-one shopping, purchasing and immediate downloading of books online anytime anywhere in the US and you don’t even need a computer for that as it’s done on the reader itself. There are several brands of electronic book readers to choose from in the market. Having that said, don’t bother to look beyond the top of the pack as many of the rest are still in beta. By far the two most proven brands are the Amazon Kindle and Sony PRS. Both have generated running series and are already into their latter models. The consensus though, is Amazon with its Kindle 2 is fast drawing away from competition with Sony’s flagship PRS – 700 a distant second. If you’re in the market for an e-book reader, you must act fast especially if it’s a Kindle 2 you’re after. Quoted delivery lead-time averaged 10 weeks during the holiday season although you can also buy Kindle 2 ex-stock on eBay but that would likely involve a price premium. People are packing away their hard copy books and they are going digital with their reading. That seems to be both fashion and function these days. The Amazon Kindle 2 may come in an off-white color but it’s really green at its core. Given that it’s going to revolutionize the way people read and the scale of its impact based on the its projected sales volume, it’s not difficult to imagine the number of trees that would be spared from being turned into paper for books which in turn benefits the environment and then ultimately us all, readers and non-readers alike. Kindle 2 Reader save money too. Savvy readers would realize that Amazon subsidizes its Kindle book sales and provides Free sampling of e-books so you are never mistaken about buying a book. That may be string attached to sell its electronic book reader but the bottom line makes sense at the end of the day. Even for occasional readers, this should be a no-brainer. That’s on top of all the other good stuff it brings.

Want to know why the Kindle Electronic Book Reader is the top Amazon Kindle 2? We have the facts and figures to share.

And if those privileged with the initial Kindle are still gaga over it, wait till they catch sight and Buy Kindle 2. In a nutshell, the Kindle 2 is the original Kindle with a big step further into the future of reading. With the supply chain of books becoming increasingly e-based, paper-filled books were always going to turn into e books. Now that we have just the perfect all-in-one device to procure, read and bring with you all the books you want anywhere you go and anytime you want, that’s hard to resist. Oprah loves her electronic book reader, so too will many of us love ours. There are quite a few brands of electronic book readers in the market but only a handful of them are generally considered to be up to mark. The two heavyweights are the Amazon Kindle and Sony PRS and they split bragging rights over various factors albeit not exactly in neck and neck fashion. If independent review sites are anything to go by, the Kindle has an emphatic overall edge and is powering away with its second edition – Kindle 2. The Kindle 2 eBook Reader is in great demand. Availability of stock at Amazon is at best intermittent. Waiting time fluctuates and they are not accepting overseas orders although some 3rd-party distributers and retailers do ship abroad with due shipping charges and mark-up. They are also sporadically spotted on eBay and when they are, are surely to be accompanied by price premium. Analysts estimate that the original Kindle sold in excess of half a million units. Going by the current rate, the Kindle 2 is poised to sell lots more. That means it’s not only good for readers, it’s great for the environment. Electronic book readers can substitute the need for books so the Kindle 2 can save quite a few trees from being turned into paper for them. Yes, the Kindle 2 is green. Amazon Kindle How-To Series: HELP! My Kindle 2 is Frozen!

One thing about electronic devices – they know how to put us in a panic every once in a while! The new Amazon Kindle 2 is no different – it sometimes seems to get possessed by one of those demons in the books stored deep inside it’s memory. While the Kindle 2 is a very well designed and durable device, it is subject to strange behavior. The worst of these behaviors is when the Kindle 2 freezes-up. The pages don’t turn, the screen saver won’t turn-off no matter how many times you “Slide and release the power switch to wake”.

There are a few things you can do to “unfreeze” your Kindle 2, but the best cure is a bit of prevention. First, let’s get to the “unfreezing”. In the Kindle 1 you have a few options to unfreeze your device:

A. Use the keyboard reset – hold down the ALT and SHIFT keys then press the “R” button.

B. Manually reset by remove the back cover and insert a paper clip (GENTLY) into the “Reset” hole to reset and unfreeze the Kindle.

C. Remove the battery (with the unit unplugged), turn on the power button to discharge the power in the Kindle, then reinstall the battery.

Unfortunately the new Kindle 2 does not have a keyboard reset, there is no manual reset using a paper clip, and the battery cannot be accessed. So you have one option left for unfreezing your Kindle 2. That is resetting the device using the Power button.

Before doing this it’s a good idea to make sure your Kindle 2 is completely charged. Even if it is “frozen” it should still charge – that is the charging indicator should light when the charger is connected. If the charging indicator does not light-up check your plug and if that’s OK contact Amazon Kindle support.

Once you are satisfied that your Kindle 2 is charged it’s time to reset. To do this –

1. Remove your Kindle 2 from the charger.

2. Slide the power switch to the right and hold it there.

3. SLOWLY count to 15 (the switch has to be held in-place for at least 15 seconds).

4. Release the switch.

5. What will happen? At first NOTHING so don’t panic.

6. After about 5 to 10 seconds the Kindle 2 will flash on and off several times.

7. The Amazon logo will appear along with a progress bar showing the Kindle is restarting.

8. Next the Hope page will load with the ebooks, audio books, and other media you’ve loaded onto your Kindle.

That’s it! You should be back in business ready to read another book.

A few things to remember:

If you only hold the Power button to the right for five to 10 seconds you’ll just turn the unit OFF. You have to hold the power button to the right for at least 15 seconds.

If the process above does not work – contact the Amazon Kindle support team. They are very helpful and may be able to do some other trouble-shooting on your device.

Now – how do you prevent your Kindle 2 from freezing in the first place?

Well, unlike the Kindle 1, the Kindle 2 does not like to be completely turned off and on. The unit goes into a screensaver power-down mode when not in use consuming very little power. Try leaving the unit on continually and take advantage of the power-down feature. This seems to prevent freeze-ups for many owners. Ok, ok, if you’re flying please turn off your Kindle and wait until you get above 10,000 feet before turning on approved electronic devices. And please disable the wireless feature Kindle while flying!

One other thing you can do to prevent Kindle 2 freeze-ups is to make sure your battery doesn’t fall below about 15% to 20% charged. The device seems to work better when the charge is above 20%. You don’t have to charge your Kindle 2 everyday – in fact that is NOT recommended unless you need it. Just watch the power indicator and give your Kindle 2 a charge when the battery level falls below 20%.

OK – by now we trust you are back to enjoying your favorite ebook or audio book. Congratulations! You’ve learned how-to unfreeze your Kindle 2 and prevent future freeze-ups from happening.
