Don’t Panic!: What happened to the planned U.S. offensive in Kandahar?
Maybe I’m just an old fuddy duddy, but back when I was coming up, surprise was considered an essential element of successful warfare. In fact, I can still recall that glorious day when I learned about the importance of surprise in war. It was 1832 and, just for fun, I downloaded the great Prussian military theorist Carl Von Clausewitz’s then-newly published “On War” to my Kindle. We didn’t have …

Amazon Kindle Not Ready For Europe

By: Alejandra Hidalgo

I received my order of the Amazon Kindle International version yesterday afternoon and I rushed to install it (after I bought a plug connector, as the Kindle comes with the American plug). I was able to start it up effortless and in no time I was reading books (in English) acquired from the Amazon Kindle store. I think that the device itself works very well and provides for a comfortable reading platform. The problem is that the content is not there yet for the European market: One of the reasons I had for buying the Kindle was to have paperless access during my morning train commuting of my favorite newspaper, the Financial Times. Well, it is past eight in the morning and I am still waiting for the trial edition of the FT to be downloaded in my Amazon Kindle. I know it is the American Edition of the FT, but what is the use of a digital newspaper service that will not be accessible in the early hours of the morning? Other reason for buying the Amazon Kindle was to have a subscription of the Economist, which to my disappointment is not available for Europeans. Same thing with books in the Spanish language, my mother tongue. Though the Amazon Kindle store has the latest authors of the Spanish language in its original language, these are not available for Europeans. I understand that there are copy rights issues here but it is rather bitter to see that the Sony Ebook store started recently to sell these books to Europeans (though at prices that near EUR 30). I recommend that German speakers and other Europeans do sufficient research on what is actually available in their language before deciding which ebook to buy. Overall, I like this ebook but I am disappointed with the current content. I guess my Amazon Kindle book will stay by my night table and will not be travelling with me in the daily commute or business trips.

Later, in 2007, when Amazon launched the original Kindle e-book reader, the way that people read books also began to change. The subsequent release of the enhanced Kindle 2, quickly followed by the large display Kindle DX in 2009, ensured that e-book readers became accepted by the public and, although still fairly new, the market for both e-book readers and e-books began to grow exponentially.

One of the most important factors in the Kindle’s success – apart from the fact that it was an extremely well designed piece of hardware – was the large amount of Kindle books which were available for the Kindle users to choose from. Currently there are more than 400,000 Kindle books available on the Amazon website – and this number is growing at an average rate of 500 everyday.

In addition to changing the manner in which books are bought, delivered and read, the Kindle reader gives would-be authors the opportunity to have their work published and showcased by the world’s largest book seller.
